RYA SRC Marine Radio Course

A one-day course for anyone who owns or uses a fixed of hand-held marine VHF radio. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and DSC equipment on any British flagged vessel fitted with a radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. This course is a pre-requisite to Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore examinations. This course is followed by an exam.

The exam syllabus for the SRC qualification is specified by CEPT, the European administration that regulates standards for telecommunications. The exam syllabus includes the following sections:

A. General Knowledge of Radiocommunications in the Maritime Mobile Service

A1. The general principles and basic features

A2. System overview of the GMDSS structure

A3. Search and Rescue (SAR)

A4. Maritime Safety Information (MSI)

B. Practical Knowledge of Radio Equipment

B1. VHF radio installation

B2. Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

B3. Antennas, interfacing and power sources

C. Procedures and Practical Operation of the Subsystems

C1. DSC Distress, urgency and safety communication procedures

C2. Protection of distress frequencies

C3. Alerting, Communication and Locating Signals

D. Radiotelephony Procedures

D1. Ability to exchange communications relevant to the safety of life at sea

D2. Practical and theoretical knowledge of radiocommunication procedures

E. Regulations for Vhf Communications

E1. Regulations, obligatory procedures and practices

Duration: one-day plus 2-3 hours self learning prior to attending the course.
Time: 08:30 to 18:30 with a break for lunch including an exam.
Price: £95 Non-members, £75 Members

Exam: £60 to all students in addition to above- note this fee is paid entirely to the RYA as a pass through cost.
