RYA First Aid Course
The RYA First Aid course is a one-day course which covers all the usual first aid subjects, but with a boating perspective. It is designed to provide the skills, techniques & knowledge for anyone who goes afloat to deliver a rapid & appropriate first aid response. The boating specific content includes:
- the recovery position in a confined space
- CPR, including the drowning protocol
- cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
- seasickness and dehydration
- medical assistance or advice by VHF
Candidates will be required to participate in CPR practice so please attend the course in comfortable clothing.
A first aid manual is included in the cost of the course, as is the certificate on successful completion.
Joining instructions:-
Please be prompt ready to start at 0900, finish time of approximately 1630, with 30 minutes for lunch and a break mid morning and mid afternoon. The first aid training will be practical in nature so please wear comfortable clothing that you would be happy kneeling down in, (kneeling mats will be provided) and lying down/ being moved on the floor. Trousers as opposed to skirts would probably make this more comfortable for the day. Any person with long hair please bring a hair tie to make practical work easier. If anyone has any injuries or physical limitations please bring that to the attention of the trainer who will endeavour to accommodate this. COVID19 rules are ever changing and will be adhered to on the course, currently mask wearing is a personal choice, sanitising gel will be available and other measures with regards to equipment are currently being taken as well. Ventilation is a good way to minimise risk, so please bring an extra layer to wear as it could be cooler in the classroom then you would perhaps expect. A manuel is provided for the course and no previous knowledge is required to take the course.
