Junior Sailing and Tuition

The club has a thriving junior RYA Training Scheme run by senior sailing instructor, Kerry Paul. She has a band of over 20 volunteers, who regularly help with the training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30 – 8.30pm. The training is for junior members only and is offered at a reduced rate, for a five session course between April and October. We train over 90 children a year between the ages of 7 - 18 years.

The junior section of the club was very proud to accept the RYA Volvo Club of Excellence award from Joe Glanfield, one of England’s 470 Olympic dinghy sailors, in April this year. The training is given in 16 club boats: 8 Optimists, 4 Picos, 2 RS Fevas and 2 open Bic’s. We also run 2 orange, Jeanneau rescue boats.

We have a number of young members who have been accepted into the RYA South West Squad, and are training regularly with the top of the Optimist, topper and laser fleets. We have successfully completed 2 race training weekends, run by Duncan West. All the participants received excellent tuition, and we had some very positive feedback. Thanks must go to all our volunteers for making these events possible! - If you have any time spare on a Tuesday or Thursday evening, and would like to help with the junior section, please contact the club.

Thanks goes to Honor Lewis and her family who have kindly bought the club a new optimist for our fleet, in memory of her husband, Major John Lewis. It will be the 3rd boat to be donated by local families, we are very grateful.
